Just bought a new T430S with the Matte screen. Hated the screen because the colors were washed out. Replaced it with the same 1600x900 resolution GLOSSY screen and am EXTREMELY happy with a glossy screen. Super vibrant colors, excellent brightness and contrast. About $75 and SUPER EASY TO REPLACE if you are careful.

The screen on the X1 is much better than the T430s and it's better when you apply the correct monitor profile within gnome-control-center. The performance is quite good but I could do with a little more speed from the SSD. I'm running one of the models with the i5, 4GB RAM and a 128GB SSD.

My daily use laptop is now the ThinkPad X1 Carbon. I'm extremely pleased with it and it's the best ultrabook that I've found so far for someone who is serious about security and reliability.

Hey Major,

Great review... I am about to switch from a mac back to a linux based laptop... I just looked at the t430's, the new t430u and the X1 as possibilities. Would you still go with Thinkpad, has anything changed in your decision? Any advice would be appreciated..

Hello Major,

Thank you very much for your excellent review of the Tinkpad T430s. I am considering purchasing this model myself after some disappointing experiences with the Panasonic Toughbook division and one of their products. I am writing educational software, which is also distributed to students using Apple computers. As these quizzes are .exe files, Parallels is required to run these files. An ability to conduct occasional cross checks is making me consider buying the latest 15 inch Macbook Pro Retina with Windows installed. However, my doubts include the glossy screen and the fact that I would probably spend most of my time in the Windows environment. I am also concerned about the sealed, no-access hardware design. Any thoughts from you would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Ralf

I had a terrible experience ordering from Lenovo.com , and they cancelled my order due to a pricing error on their system.
Found that this can be ordered (limited configurations) from Walmart.com, and BandHphptovideo.com - they ship relatively faster.

Do you know if there are better alternate LCDs for the t430s? I'll admit that the thinkpad configurations aren't stellar across the board. At the very least, it is really to swap partson your own if you don't want to send it in for changes. There may be a better LCD for your model and although it's not a cinch (took me 3 hours to do), at least I didn't have to deal with customer service.

Glad to know I'm not alone! I've gotten a couple of tweets and emails saying the same thing. It's rather annoying that they make a quality product but don't have any decent service wrapped around it. :(

ThinkPad was like this even before they were sold to Lenovo by IBM...I was trying to buy direct for a small company in the mid-2000s, ordering ~20 or so at a time (CDW had comparable pricing and fast service but only stocked very low RAM models, and buying extra RAM and swapping was a pain). Exactly the same atrocious and unacceptable order behavior you describe, even with an assigned corporate sales rep (who would suddenly disappear for weeks--once his manager told me he didn't know where our rep was!). Point is, it's historically been good kit--too bad about your monitor--but for anybody not buying in the thousands, direct has always been an abysmal failure. I don't know why they even support the model.
